CBN and Diamond Abrasives

What is CBN and Diamond??

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) and Diamond are the two hardest materials found on our planet and therefore are ideal for use as abrasives. Companies like General Electric and DeBeers manufacture many grades of industrial diamonds and CBN for use in grinding wheels. Diamond abrasives are used for grinding all kinds of non-ferrous materials such as glasses, ceramics, and carbides. CBN is specifically used for grinding ferrous materials (containing Iron, Nickel, or Cobalt).

Types of CBN and Diamond

There are numerous types of CBN and Diamond abrasives available from various manufacturers, and the choice of abrasive type is based on the specific grinding application. The most commonly used crystal type is the monocrystalline crystal that has well defined cleavage planes that allow the crystal to break when under high grinding pressure. The other type of crystal in common use is the microcrystalline.  This allows sub-micron sized particles to chip off each crystal under lower grinding pressures than the monocrystalline type.  Within these two categories of mono and micro crystals, there are numerous subcategories of crystals with different toughness and shapes.

No matter how difficult or unique your grinding application is, Meister will choose the best abrasive crystal for you!
